Brutalist façade in deep shadow

Concrete Mirage

The brutalist movement has long been misunderstood as purely functional and devoid of human warmth. In this series, we challenge that preconception by focusing on the interplay between stark concrete forms and the organic unpredictability of natural light. The rigid geometry becomes a canvas for the ephemeral.

Shot entirely on medium format film over the course of a single winter in Eastern Europe, the cold climate acts as a silent collaborator. The overcast skies provided a diffuse, almost shadowless illumination that strips away distraction, leaving only the raw, textural essence of the architecture itself.

We aimed to capture the silence of these monolithic structures. There is a specific kind of quietness found in abandoned brutalist sites β€” a heavy, resonant silence that speaks to utopian dreams left unfulfilled. The scale is intentionally overwhelming, dwarfing the viewer to emphasize the imposing nature of the design.

"Architecture is the learned game, correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in the light."
Le Corbusier
